Tips on how to achieve your health goals.
Many of us know the pure joy of reaching a goal that we worked so hard to achieve, but so many others know the disappointment that can come trying to set goals.
Goals are personal. There are so many factors that come into play when taking the right steps to get your health goals where you want them – your background, skill level, age, and history of any injuries must be taken into consideration. Although it’s best to work with a skilled professional to fine tune your health journey, we have a few tips that will help get you started.
- Find your purpose. Why do you want to do this? When your goals are related to a specific reason or purpose, you will be much more driven to get there.
- Set small, realistic standards. Wishes are not goals. Wishes are usually in our fantasy dream world that would be nice to achieve but are not very attainable. Make small goals that are easy to attain, then move onto bigger, broader goals.
- Don’t give up. Accept imperfection. While you should give yourself a lot of grace if you get a little off course, don’t throw in the towel all together. Instead, try to discover the reason why you got off course in the first place and what you can do to prevent it from happening again.
- Celebrate your progress! Do something to reaffirm your progress when you reach a milestone, after all, you’ve earned it! When you take the time to appreciate your victories, it will make getting to the next goal that much easier.
- It takes a tribe. Who do you have that is supporting you, helping you press on? When you have a strong support system who know, understand and support your goals, it’s unlikely that you will fail.
- Set a measurable outcome. Find a specific date that you want to achieve your goals. It’s much easier to finish a race when you can see the finish line. This is also helpful to set realistic goals based on that date. For example, if you want to run a marathon one month from now but aren’t an avid runner, this is probably unrealistic!
- Keep it relevant to your life. Don’t just set a goal just because. Make goals that work with your life and don’t seem like too much of a burden.
- Document your journey. Writing down your progress is a great way to see how far you’ve come and motivate you to keep going. If you want to increase your back squat weight, keep a journal of the weight and reps that you were able to hit and watch those numbers increase over a certain amount of time.
